Honoring the Roamin’ Man of the Smokies:
Where Tradition, Storytelling, and Mountain Flavor Meet
Wiley Oakley was a legendary guide and storyteller from the Great Smoky Mountains, known for his deep knowledge of the area. He helped establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and became known as the “Roamin man of the Smokies” for sharing the region’s beauty and history with visitors.
Oakley remains a symbol of old-time Smoky Mountain life—a bridge between the rugged past and the modern national park era. His stories keep Appalachian oral traditions alive, and his influence can still be felt in Gatlinburg’s storytelling culture today.
